Slate Fireplaces
Every type of roofing is naturally complemented by some characteristic elements that become an integral part of the roof. The most prominent element is the fireplace, which is the outer terminal part of the chimney, which today constitutes the rationalization of the historic artifact.
The fireplace is thus composed: on two slate shelves, shaped like a "U", fixed in the underlying masonry part, four vertical slabs are placed on top of each other, joined together with nails or metal ligaments. Inside this box, where the masonry continues up to about half the height, a fifth slate slab is placed slightly inclined to allow the drainage of water.
The chimney draft is ensured by 4 lateral openings made in the masonry above which the horizontal slab has been placed. Also in slate slabs, the connection is made between the roof slope and the masonry part of the fireplace, in order to guarantee further waterproofing to the underlying lead apron.
